Some things can’t be fixed.
A bespoke stop motion film.
the challenge.
Inspired by the hidden horros of domestic abuse, I wanted to create a subtle and creative film that was hard hitting and original.
motion control and stop motion.
Stop motion animation is a tried and tested animation technique that has been around for decades. It requires craft, precision and expertise to master.
The end result is often fantastic.
I wanted the film to retain a sense of craft that would be lost in CGI or Cell and from a narrative perspective I felt it adds to the reality of the content.
To execute this and add a layer of sophistication, motion control was employed to keep the camera movement perfect as it tracked in to the subject. All of these considerations of movement, framing, animation and design were taken in to account long before the teddy was picked apart!

Styling.
I created a range of style boards to accompany the storyboards detailing how I wanted the animation to look and feel. This is an important stage of the planning process and has incredibly importnat when directing.
Colouring in.
Once filming is complete, its into the
grading suite.
For this film the context of a child’s bedroom allowed for a warmer and
softer grade to it.
We wanted to have the audience to have an uncomfortable experience
with what they were viewing in the moving footage along with the audio
being quite distressing, but the environment being a place of sanctuary
and innocence.
